Teeth of the Sea are an adventurous psychedelic rock outfit, incorporating synth and trumpet into their rock and roll sound, creating something quite special to listen to.
I knew they wanted to do something unique for the promo of their new album, 'Wraith', so was happy to receive the call. Initially make-up and creative artist Natalie Sharp. had the idea to create patterns on the band member's bodies using different colored paints. The idea to capture the impact of the powder on their faces came as I had recently been experimenting with ultra-high speed flash on my Fuji X-series cameras and new short-duration flash kit, allowing an powder-freezing 1/5000 shutter speed.
After some experiments we realised the powder looked best just as it riccohetted off the band's faces. So I had the assistants throw the diffent coloured powders slightly out of sync, and delayed the shutter press to capture the most dramatic moment of the motion.
The resulting mess was worth it, as the band and label decided to use these images for the album artwork instead of publicity, with the three mid-flight images turning the vinyl release into a gatefold sleeve.
